Enhanced conversions for web help measure an outcome completed on the website. Enhanced conversions for leads connect website lead information with later imported business outcomes. Choose by where the outcome happens, then verify that the data and workflow can support it.
The difference is the business milestone
Google's enhanced-conversions overview distinguishes online conversions from later offline lead outcomes and describes hashed first-party data used for matching. These are related measurement capabilities, not two ways to turn every form submit into a sale.
An online checkout may need measurement of its completed purchase. A business that takes an inquiry online and closes the sale later needs a reliable later record as well. The existence of an email field does not establish that a lead was qualified, a contract was signed or a payment was made. Define that later milestone before planning its import.
Compare readiness, not just setup options
| Criterion | For web | For leads |
|---|---|---|
| Outcome location | A conversion happens on the website. | A later milestone is recorded outside the initial web interaction. |
| Evidence needed | A reliable website completion signal and appropriate user-provided data. | A reliable lead record, later outcome and supported import connection. |
| Main operational owner | Website and Ads measurement owners. | Website, CRM or sales-operations, and Ads owners together. |
| Common mistake | Collecting fields without verifying the underlying conversion. | Sending a form event but never importing the later outcome. |
Hashing is a processing step, not permission to collect or share anything. Keep fields limited to the approved purpose and follow the current provider requirements and the business's privacy decisions. Do not place customer identifiers in page URLs, ordinary analytics parameters or a public debugging worksheet.
An inquiry today, an accepted proposal later
Illustrative scenario: a consultancy receives an inquiry on Monday, qualifies it on Wednesday and records an accepted proposal two weeks later. Website measurement can observe the inquiry. It cannot infer the Wednesday qualification or later acceptance from the original button click.
A leads workflow needs a defined source of each milestone, a stable relationship to the original lead and an agreed import rule. “Qualified” might mean an explicit review status rather than the presence of a phone number. “Won” might mean the contract status rather than an invoice draft. Sales operations must own those definitions.
Before implementation, sketch one record from initial capture to later outcome. Label which fields are available, which are approved for matching, when the record changes and what prevents re-importing the same milestone as a new outcome. Use synthetic examples for the design review. Our CRM-to-ad-platform guide covers the handoff evidence.
Successful tagging is only one part of leads measurement
Google's enhanced-conversions diagnostics documentation distinguishes issues such as missing user-provided data, no attempted imports and no matches. These represent different breaks in the path. A tag firing on the website does not prove that later CRM outcomes were uploaded or matched.
Use that distinction in acceptance testing. Verify the online signal, the authorized data transformation, the later outcome extraction, the import result and the diagnostic status separately. Matching and attributed reporting may require time and eligible data; an accepted upload is not proof of a specific campaign result.
Current interfaces and supported ingestion routes can change. Verify the live account's available setup and the latest provider instructions before implementing an API or reusing a legacy import tutorial. The architectural decision in this article does not depend on one permanently fixed settings screen.
A useful readiness exercise
- Write one sentence defining the outcome and where it becomes authoritative.
- Identify the system and person responsible for that record.
- Document which approved fields connect the online lead and later record.
- Set the timestamp, value, currency and duplicate-handling rules for each milestone.
- Check available import methods and diagnostics in the actual Ads account.
- Choose a safe validation path and a person who will investigate future failures.
If the later outcome is not recorded consistently, improve that business process first. More matching technology cannot repair a sales team using “won” to mean three different things. If the only outcome you need is an online purchase, a later lead-import workflow may add work without addressing the requirement.
When a focused review is useful
Track & Optimize can discuss a diagnostic of one existing journey when a defined event handoff is unclear. A new CRM integration, data cleanup or ongoing import operation needs separate implementation scope. You can also take the readiness exercise to your existing developer and sales-operations team; paid diagnostic work is optional when they can already establish the evidence.
